Coworker Gift Exchange: 12 Holiday Gifts Under $30

By Rachel Simmons
October 30, 2026 5 Min Read

Twenty-five dollars. That was the cap at my last office exchange, and I still stood in an aisle for forty minutes.

Here is the thing I wish I had known first: thoughtful does not have to mean elaborate. Pick one useful detail, stay inside the agreed cap, and wrap it neatly. That is plenty.

The 12 gifts below all come in at $30 or less. Prices are typical US retail estimates, not guarantees, since holiday promotions, sizes and materials can shift the total (and gift wrap sneaks in, too). Check the final price and delivery date before you commit, especially when your exchange has a firm limit.

Start with the rules, not the shelf

If the group set a $25 limit, aim a little below it instead of banking on a sale that might vanish. Count tax and wrapping in your head. A gift receipt helps with sizes or scents, though cheap items do not always come with one.

When the recipient is a mystery, choose something easy to use and easy to pass along. A tumbler in a calm color works, as does a mild soap set or a game with simple rules. Skip joke gifts that could land badly, workplace-themed items that assume too much, and anything that turns into a chore for the person unwrapping it. I would also skip food unless you know the allergy and dietary situation, because one missed peanut warning can sour a whole party.

Which tumbler is worth it?

A reusable cup is the safe bet when you do not know someone’s hobbies. Look for a size that fits a car cup holder, a lid that is easy to clean, and a finish that does not show every fingerprint. Insulation and leak resistance vary a lot at this price, so treat bold temperature claims with some skepticism.

1. Stainless steel insulated tumbler, about $20 to $30. A double-wall tumbler keeps a desk drink warm longer than a plain cup and gives the recipient a reason to skip a disposable one. Pick a simple color if you do not know their style. Some budget lids dribble when tipped, so this suits a desk better than a packed tote.

2. Insulated travel mug with handle, about $18 to $28. The handle makes it easy to carry from the kitchen to a meeting, and a compact shape can fit a car cup holder. Check the lid before buying. Many are splash-resistant rather than truly leakproof, which matters if someone parks it beside a laptop.

3. Compact reusable cold cup, about $10 to $22. Light, with a straw, and handy for iced coffee, water or a smoothie at a shared desk. Budget-friendly, yes, but plastic will not hold the chill as long as insulated steel.

Soap that gets used

Hand care feels festive without being too personal, and a decent soap or lotion gets used instead of saved for a special occasion. Keep scents gentle if you have no idea what the person likes. Strong fragrance can be a headache in a small office, and some people simply prefer unscented products.

4. Scented soap gift set, about $12 to $25. A boxed set of bar soaps feels more gift-ready than a single bar, with scents like citrus, lavender or fresh herbs. It is a nice upgrade for the bathroom sink. Richly scented bars may not suit sensitive skin, though.

5. Hand cream duo, about $10 to $20. Two small tubes split easily between a desk drawer and a coat pocket, and they earn their keep in dry winter office air. I tried a heavily perfumed one once and my deskmate asked me, politely, to put it away. Choose a light fragrance or none. Tiny tubes are convenient but may not last long with frequent use.

6. Hand wash and lotion set, about $18 to $30. A coordinated set makes a polished present for someone who enjoys small home comforts. Check bottle size and scent notes so it does not overpower. Pump bottles are awkward to wrap without a gift bag.

Desk upgrades, minus the clutter

For someone you see every weekday, a small desk upgrade hits a sweet spot: useful, easy to carry home, not awkwardly personal. Think about shared-office realities. Anything noisy, strongly scented or sprawling across the desk is better left on the shelf.

7. Insulated food jar, about $18 to $29. A compact jar keeps soup or oatmeal warm until lunch, which is thoughtful for anyone who brings meals from home. Look for a wide mouth that is easy to wash. Some jars are heavier than a basic lunch container, and that is the trade-off.

8. Desk plant in a small pot, about $12 to $25. A hardy little plant adds color without taking over. It is best for someone with natural light nearby. A live plant does ask for occasional care (actually, that is the whole point of one), so choose an easy variety, not a fussy one.

9. Reusable notebook and pen set, about $12 to $28. Good for meeting notes, quick lists or sketching ideas during a call. Pick a neutral cover and a pen that writes smoothly. Plenty of people already own notebooks, so this works best when the set feels especially nice to use.

Games people will actually play

A small game can turn an exchange into something the whole team does together. Check the player count and round length first. At an office party, a game that starts in two minutes beats one that needs a rules seminar.

10. Portable party card game, about $10 to $20. A quick card game gives the team something to do after lunch or during a low-key holiday gathering. Look for short rounds and clear rules. Humor is subjective, so skip anything built on edgy jokes in a mixed workplace.

11. Cooperative family card game, about $12 to $25. Players work toward one goal instead of competing, which feels welcoming when coworkers have different gaming experience. Make sure the group size fits your team. A two-player game will do very little at a crowded party.

12. Mini tabletop puzzle game, about $15 to $30. A quieter option for a desk break or a small gathering, and a nice change from yet another mug. Check the age range and difficulty so it is not frustrating. Or solved in 30 seconds.

My pick, if you made me choose one: the insulated tumbler in a plain color. Nobody has ever been upset to receive it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I spend on a coworker gift exchange?

Follow the group’s cap. If it is $25, aim a little below it so tax and wrapping do not push you over.

What is a safe gift when I barely know the person?

A tumbler in a calm color, a mild soap set, or a simple card game. All are easy to use and easy to pass along.

Should I give food in an office exchange?

Only if you know the group’s allergies and dietary needs. Otherwise skip it.

Are the prices in this list exact?

No. They are typical US retail estimates, and promotions, sizes and materials can change them, so check the final price and delivery date.
