Waterproof Walking Boots: 11 Best Picks for UK Mud, Rain and Weekend Hikes

Your feet will tell you more than a spec sheet ever can.

That is the one thing I would want you to take from this guide, so I have put it first. I have pulled together 11 waterproof walking boots for everything from muddy dog walks to longer hill days. I compared them on paper: membrane, sole design, construction and intended use. I have not run lab or trail tests, and I will not pretend otherwise. Prices are approximate UK RRP or typical listed prices in GBP, and they shift with sales, colour and size.

Waterproof is not the same as dry

Water still gets in over the ankle cuff. A membrane will not help if your socks are soaked with sweat. Boots are not magic.

So match the boot to your routes, then give it a proper fit check before you commit. I once bought a pair purely because the reviews were glowing (they were, and my heels blistered within a mile).

Best all-rounders for a first pair

For a first pair, look for a versatile mid-height boot with a waterproof membrane, a secure heel and a sole that copes with gravel, grass and ordinary muddy paths. I lean towards comfortable and predictable over ultra-stiff, because a boot you wear twice is a poor buy. These three cover different fits and walking styles.

1. Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX — around £170. This lightweight, supportive option suits day hikes where you want a nimble feel rather than heavy leather. The membrane and trail-focused outsole handle mixed ground. The close fit may feel snug if you have broad feet or like thick socks.

2. Merrell Moab 3 Mid GTX — around £150. The Moab line is a familiar pick for walkers who want cushioning straight out of the box, plus a waterproof build for changeable weather. It is a sensible weekend all-rounder. You give up some precision compared with lighter technical boots.

3. Keen Targhee III Mid Waterproof — around £150. A roomier forefoot is the main draw, especially if tapered boots cramp your toes. It is made for steady trail walking, with a protective toe area and waterproof construction. That generous fit will not suit everyone, so check heel security rather than simply sizing down.

Mud, leads and impatient dogs

Dog walks mean repeated trips across churned fields, slippery woodland and puddles you only spot too late. Look for lugged tread, a secure ankle and uppers that wipe clean. A boot that is quick to pull on is worth more than you would think when the dog is already doing its impatient lead dance.

4. Adidas Terrex AX4 Mid GTX — around £130. It feels more athletic than a classic leather boot, with a waterproof membrane and an outsole made for varied trails. Good for brisk routes and muddy park edges. On rocky, uneven ground the lighter build feels less substantial than a heavier trekking boot.

5. Berghaus Explorer Trek GTX — around £160. A practical mid-height boot for regular walks where comfort and weather protection matter more than shaving grams. The waterproof lining and sturdy construction suit wet paths and longer loops. It is bulkier than a trail shoe, so short dry pavement strolls may feel like too much boot.

Do not judge grip by how aggressive the tread looks in a product photo. Check that the lugs are properly separated, then think about how often you will be digging mud out from between them. A gaiter keeps debris out. It will not fix a boot that is loose around your ankle.

Salomon or Merrell: which one fits you?

The Salomon vs Merrell walking boots question mostly comes down to feel. Salomon hiking styles tend to feel locked-in and athletic, while the popular Moab boots from Merrell are known for a cushioned, accommodating fit. That is a broad comparison, not a promise across every model or foot. Try both with the socks you will actually walk in, ideally later in the day when your feet have spread a little.

6. Salomon Quest 4 GTX — around £220. This higher-cut boot is aimed at demanding hikes and heavier loads, with substantial support and a protective waterproof build. It makes more sense on rough hills or multi-day trips than on a canal towpath. Weight and stiffness are the catch. Your feet may need time to adjust, and casual walkers might find it overbuilt.

7. Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof — around £130. This non-GTX version gives you waterproof protection in the familiar cushioned mid boot, often cheaper than the Gore-Tex edition. Worth comparing if you want the Moab fit without paying for a branded membrane. Like any lined boot it can run warm in summer, so breathable socks matter.

Fit beats the logo.

If the shop has an incline, stand on it. Your toes should not slam into the front when you lean forward, and your heel should not lift with every step. Salomon often suits people who like a snug, controlled feel, and Merrell may appeal if you want more room and plush cushioning. Foot shape varies enough that neither brand wins for everyone, and I have seen sensible walkers swear by each.

Is leather worth the upkeep?

Leather can be a lovely choice for regular walkers who want a robust upper and do not mind some upkeep. These boots are often heavier than fabric pairs, and the leather needs cleaning and conditioning to stay supple. If you plan to wear them for years, the option to resole can matter as much as the membrane. Check the maker’s repair options before buying.

8. Scarpa Terra GTX — around £220. A leather upper gives this boot a traditional, protective feel for established paths and longer days out. The membrane adds wet-weather reassurance, and the supportive construction suits serious walking better than quick errands. It is a sizeable investment and needs care. Never leave muddy leather to dry beside a radiator.

9. Meindl Bhutan MFS GTX — around £300. This substantial leather hiking boot is for walkers who want support on bigger days and rougher trails. The padded fit system and waterproof lining are appealing for extended use. Price, weight and break-in time make it a poor match for occasional park walks. If you buy it, build up wear gradually instead of heading straight out for a full-day hike.

Leather care is not fussy, but it does need doing. Brush off grit and let the boots dry naturally. Use a care product suited to the upper. Waterproofing treatments help maintain performance, though they cannot revive damaged seams or replace a worn-out membrane.

Fit first, ankle support second

Start with the shape of your foot and the walks you do, not a claim that a boot is the best. Try both boots on, lace them firmly and walk around for several minutes. You want room to wiggle your toes, a held heel and no hot spots across the instep. Supportive boots for muddy dog walks should feel stable without pinching when you turn or step sideways.

10. Lowa Renegade GTX Mid — around £230. This mid boot is a versatile leather option with a supportive feel for day walks and moderate hikes. The waterproof construction suits damp UK routes, and the structured platform feels reassuring underfoot. The price is steep. Walkers after a flexible, featherweight boot may prefer a lighter fabric model.

11. Hoka Anacapa 2 Mid GTX — around £180. This boot pairs waterproof protection with a cushioned ride and a rocker-shaped sole that feels smooth on long paths. It is tempting if comfort tops your list. The distinctive sole will not suit every stride, and it can feel less sure-footed on very uneven ground. Try it on a ramp if you can.

Which matters more to you, cushioning or control?

For men’s or women’s waterproof walking boots, sizing labels are only a starting point. Brands differ in width and volume, and some offer wide-fit versions. Wear your walking socks for the fitting, because a thin shop sock can hide heel slip. Ankle height adds coverage and a feeling of security, but it cannot replace good balance or a sole suited to the ground.

Buy for your usual routes, not the one dramatic hike you might do once a year. My pick would be whichever pair feels dull and comfortable in the shop, because that is the one you will still be wearing in three winters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are waterproof walking boots worth it for UK weather?

For most walkers, yes. A membrane keeps out puddles, wet grass and drizzle. Water can still come in over the cuff, so fit and socks matter too.

Should I size up for walking boots?

Often a little room helps, but check your heel first. If it lifts with each step, sizing up is the wrong fix. Try boots on with your walking socks, later in the day.

Is Salomon or Merrell better for wide feet?

Merrell Moab boots usually feel roomier and more cushioned, while Salomon tends to feel snug. Foot shape varies, so try both before deciding.

How do I look after leather waterproof boots?

Brush off grit, dry them naturally away from radiators, and use a care product suited to the upper. Treatments help, but they will not fix worn seams or a failed membrane.
