Best Eyeshadow Palettes: 12 Picks for Every Skin Tone and Skill Level

By Poppy Hughes

Seven minutes before the bus, I once grabbed a palette I had never opened and somehow looked fine.

That is the real test of the best eyeshadow palettes: do they make a rushed morning easier? For this 2026 UK edit I have picked 12, spread across budgets, finishes and skill levels, with shades that work on fair, medium and deep complexions.

Buy fewer colours than you think you need

If you are new to shadow, start with a compact palette and a handful of shades you will actually wear. Already comfortable with a blending brush? Go bolder. No rules, really.

One caution before you shop. A swatch that looks loud on one person can look soft on another, because undertone, eyelid colour and brush choice all change the result. Prices below are approximate UK retail prices, and they shift with sales and shade availability.

Neutral palettes that go easy on beginners

Neutral palettes keep decisions small while still giving you enough range for a soft daytime wash or a deeper crease at night. I would look for a mix of mattes and shimmers rather than a pile of nearly identical browns. I learned that the hard way (three beige pans, all the same, in my first palette).

1. Urban Decay Naked3 Mini — about £29. Rosy taupes and soft pinks suit anyone who wants a neutral look that does not lean too warm. The small format feels friendlier than a huge palette, but if you want richer browns, the range runs out fast.

2. e.l.f. Bite-Size Eyeshadow in Cream & Sugar — about £4. Four shades cover a wash, a crease colour and a little lid shimmer. Cheap and easy. The pans are tiny, though, so a fluffy brush can feel oversized.

Pigment for every skin tone

Strong pigment is satisfying, but building colour slowly is far easier than rescuing a heavy first swipe. Deep complexions often love saturated mattes and bright metallics, while fair and medium skin gets plenty of contrast from a mid-tone paired with one deeper shade.

3. Huda Beauty Empowered Eyeshadow Palette — about £58. Warm neutrals sit beside deeper shades and metallic finishes, so you can go soft or dramatic. It costs more, and the warm direction will not please everyone, but the spread of depth is good.

4. Beauty Bay Bright 42 Colour Palette — about £25. Forty-two vivid pans mean you can play with colour without buying several palettes, which is especially handy if you like making a statement on deeper skin. It takes up space, and for a beginner that many choices can be a lot.

Drugstore palettes under £15

Cheap palettes are the best place to find out whether you reach for cool taupe or copper every morning. These are easy to find at UK beauty retailers, but check the current shade and price before buying.

5. Revolution Reloaded Palette in Velvet Rose — about £6. Rosy neutrals make a friendly everyday option, with enough depth for a softly smoked outer corner. A few shades may need primer to stay vivid through a long day. At this price, who minds?

6. NYX Ultimate Edit Petite Shadow Palette — about £10. It slips into a makeup bag easily, and the colour stories feel edited rather than overwhelming. Small pans can run out quickly if you use one shade daily, so confirm the exact colourway before ordering.

Is a premium palette worth the splurge?

Sometimes. It makes sense when you love the colour story and expect to use it often, so think about your actual routine first, because a beautiful palette that never leaves the drawer is still an expensive drawer decoration.

7. Natasha Denona I Need a Nude Eyeshadow Palette — about £62. This is a polished pick for fans of cool, rosy and beige neutrals, with mattes and reflective shades for subtle dimension. It is an investment, and the muted colours may feel too restrained if you prefer bright looks.

8. Viseart Petit Pro Neutral Palette — about £30. A smaller pro-style palette is a smart middle ground, with fewer pans, useful neutrals and a compact case. It suits someone with a favourite routine already, though it will not give you the variety of a full-size collection.

Matching shadow to blue, green and brown eyes

Eye-colour advice is a suggestion, not a law. Copper and bronze often make blue eyes pop, mauve can flatter green eyes, and brown eyes can carry almost anything. Skin tone and personal taste matter more than any chart, so try the shades you are drawn to.

9. ColourPop Stone Cold Fox Palette — about £35. Cool greys, taupes and silvery shades make a lovely smoky look, particularly with blue or grey eyes. It is large and full of choice, but UK delivery costs and import details vary by retailer.

10. Morphe 18T Truth or Bare Palette — about £20. Neutral and rosy shades give brown eyes options without every look turning too warm. It is practical for daily makeup, although the shimmers may need a fingertip or damp brush for extra impact.

A little more colour, please

Want colour without going full rainbow? These last two head in different directions, one soft and wearable, the other richer and more dramatic. Neither needs to match your eyes to look great.

11. Barry M Chisel Cheeks and Eyeshadow Palette — about £10. Look for a version with wearable browns and bronzes if you want something that travels from workday to dinner. Shade selection differs between releases, so study the product photos carefully.

12. Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette in The Rock Chick — about £46. Smoky greys and silvery tones suit evening makeup and can bring out blue eyes, while the quad layout keeps decisions simple. You are paying for a premium compact and a focused colour story. It will not replace a many-shade palette.

So how do you actually choose?

Start with your habits. If you wear makeup most mornings, a neutral palette with a light base shade, a crease colour and one deeper matte will probably earn its keep. For occasional nights out, a compact shimmer quad may be more useful than a giant collection.

Then think about finish. Mattes shape and soften definition, shimmer brings light to the lid, and metallics give a bolder effect. If your lids crease, try a thin layer of eye primer and build shadow in light passes. A good brush helps, but a fingertip can work beautifully with shimmer.

Skin tone matters too. On fair skin, pale shades can vanish, so look for a few mid-tones with enough contrast. Medium skin often wears warm browns and rose shades with ease, while deeper skin tones can benefit from rich pigments that show clearly without repeated layering. Still, swatch if you can, because photos and screen settings are poor guides to real shade.

Don’t buy a palette just because a trend says it suits your eyes. My pick is the cheap one you will finish, or the premium one you save for Saturday night, as long as the colours make you feel like yourself. Have a play.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best eyeshadow palette for beginners?

A small neutral palette with a mix of mattes and shimmers is easiest. The e.l.f. Bite-Size palette and the Urban Decay Naked3 Mini both keep the choices manageable.

Do I need an eye primer with an eyeshadow palette?

Not always, but a thin layer helps if your lids crease or your shadows fade by afternoon. Cheaper palettes tend to benefit most.

Which eyeshadow colours suit blue, green and brown eyes?

Copper and bronze often lift blue eyes, mauve can flatter green eyes, and brown eyes can wear nearly anything. Treat it as a suggestion, not a rule.

Are expensive eyeshadow palettes worth it?

Only if you love the colour story and will use it often. A £6 palette you reach for daily beats a £60 one that stays in the drawer.
